Summary

 Annah Rais is a traditional Bidayuh village located in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, on the island of Borneo. It is situated approximately 60 kilometers from the state capital, Kuching. The village is renowned for its well-preserved traditional longhouses, which offer visitors a glimpse into the cultural heritage and lifestyle of the Bidayuh people, one of the indigenous ethnic groups in Sarawak. 

Key Features of Annah Rais

 

  1. Traditional Longhouses: The village is home to several traditional longhouses made from bamboo and wood. These longhouses are large communal buildings where multiple families live together, each having their own section of the house while sharing common areas.
  2. Cultural Experience: Visitors to Annah Rais can immerse themselves in the Bidayuh culture by interacting with the locals, participating in traditional activities, and observing daily life in the village, trying local food, staying in homestays
  3. Community-led tourism: people still live there, and they can have additional revenue from selling souvenirs like hers and local food. Also there’s an entrance fee, money is used for maintenance and the rest is share twice a year (Christmas and … ) among the villagers.
  4. Hot Springs: Nearby Annah Rais, there are natural hot springs. An artificial pool has been made, but locals claim that it is a bad practice due to irregular maintenance;

all mud from the river just gets stuck at the pool — who should clean it? why you even make a pool in a river? I stopped bringing my guests there and so did some other tourist guides
 

  1. Agricultural Practices: The Bidayuh people in Annah Rais are traditionally agriculturalists, growing rice, pepper, and various fruits and vegetables. Visitors can learn about their farming methods and the importance of agriculture in their daily lives.
  2. Eco-Tourism and Adventure Activities: The surrounding area offers opportunities for eco-tourism and adventure activities such as jungle trekking, exploring caves, and river kayaking. The lush rainforest environment provides a rich backdrop for these outdoor pursuits.

These tours typically include transportation, a guided tour of the village, and activities such as visiting the hot springs, jungle trekking, and experiencing local cuisine.
